Gelidonia lighthouse in the late afternoon – A typical Mediterranean setting with the pines and blue horizon
Gelidonia lighthouse in the late afternoon – A typical Mediterranean setting with the pines and blue horizon

Have you already seen a picture of a place and thought ‘I want to be there’ ? This is what happened when I first saw a photo of the Gelidonia lighthouse. This was then followed by another thought ‘This is a great place for sunset’, closely followed by ‘and sunrise should be good too’. After further consideration I decided that it was also definitely worth experimenting night photography of the lighthouse surrounded by the stars.

The Gelidonia headland and small islands are notoriously dangerous for navigation. It was particularly difficult to navigate during the antic period, with many ships having sunk by the rocks. One of the earliest underwater archaeological explorations was actually conducted here in the 1960s. The 9m high lighthouse itself was built in the 1930s in order to make ship navigation around the headland safer.

Gelidonia is located along the Lycian trail, between Karaöz and Adrasan. The lighthouse is completely remote with no facilities, apart from a wooden platform and flattened ground suitable for camping. In order to enjoy the sunset and sunrise, I therefore decided to spend the night there (not expecting to get much sleep).

I watched the sunset from the rocky outcrops far above the lighthouse. From there one can see the whole headland, the islands, and far into the sea. As the day got darker you could feel the peace slowly setting over the place. But the most magical moment was later at night below the lighthouse. The long exposures required for night photography gave me plenty of time for sitting on the rocks and listening to the waves crashing below (and let’s not forget the distant snoring of my fellow campers). As I waited in the night, the moon started rising above the sea and pierced through the clouds: a magical display that seemed to have been set for me alone.

What this is

One never baths twice in the same river, one never climbs the same mountain again. Everything is constantly flowing through time, evolving, and therefore unique.

This is the gift of life that we each have a unique experience of the world. Every moment needs to be appreciated, treasured. Through photography we clumsily attempt to extract that tiny slice of life, that magic moment, and put it in a square box before it flies away.

This site is a testimony to what happened once ... upon a planet
